The One Thing That Holds You Back From Being Creative

No matter how creative you are, there are times when the creativity bug just doesn’t hit you. The culprit? Something we all experience. Stick with me as I reveal what blocks creativity. Creative blocks are dangerous. They cost you time, money, and energy. What’s worse, they’re caused by one thing.

What Blocks Creativity? The Truth Revealed

Many things block us from being creative. However, all creative blocks come from one horrible source. After years of experience leading conferences, I realized that there’s one thing that holds us back from being creative― fear. Whether it’s fear of failure or the unknown, fear drains us. It drains us of the creativity we need to fulfill tasks or make life brighter in general. In particular, fear makes us believe that we are not creative enough. It makes us obsess about how we can be more creative and develop better ideas. As a result, we get stuck.

 How Fear Affects Creativity

To see how fear blocks creativity, let’s paint a picture. For instance, you are a writer. Everyone’s been telling you how great you are as a writer. Everyone’s been urging you to write a book. However, deep down, you’re afraid to take the next step. You’re afraid of writing a book because it’s something different. In other words, you are crippled by fear. Consequently, you can’t think of a great idea for your book. You can’t come up with the main character. You’re trying, but you just can’t get your creative juices flowing. This example is not unique. Many authors actually experienced it.

Fear is what blocks creativity, and it takes many forms. In particular, fear can be in the form of:

  • The unknown. Not knowing where your creativity will take you halts your progress.
  • Failure. Being afraid of failing stops you from doing a creative task with flying colors.
  • Getting out of your comfort zone. Discomfort blocks you from realizing your creative potential.
  • Being ridiculed. The idea of your boss or colleague mocking your work hinders you from generating creative ideas.

How to Overcome What Blocks Creativity

  1. Just get started. Stop overthinking of what could happen. Stick to your task, and creativity will follow.
  2. Take notes. If you can’t push yourself to start, take notes instead. Write down what you want to draw, paint, or compose.
  3. Acknowledge your creativity. Claim that you are creative by nature. Recognize your skills. Believe that you are creative enough to win a Pulitzer Prize.
  4. Be inspired. Take inspiration from what’s around you. If you can go out, do so. Nature brings great inspiration.
  5. Surround yourself with other creatives. Talk to other creatives. Meeting them exposes you to new ideas, cultures, and life backgrounds.
  6. Don’t take a project that you’re not passionate about.  Passion fuels creativity. If you’re simply not passionate about a specific task, you better pass it off to someone else.

Every creative has suffered from creative blocks. However, not every creative knows that such blocks stem from one thing― fear. By knowing exactly how fear stops you, it’ll be easy to jumpstart your creativity. So the next time you wonder what blocks creativity, remember that it’s all in your head. Master your fear. Reclaim your creativity.
